In this edition of COREnered, get to know Tunecore artist David Homyk, a fun-loving, catchy tune creator who just wants to stir up your eardrums a bit. His melodies afford easy-listening when you hear his voice amidst piano chords and guitar strums. So tune in to what David had to say about his earlier (and present) days that have helped jumpstart his career in musicianship.
- What is your first musical memory?
When I was 2 years old both my parents were in post PhD programs at
Perdue University. My dad would come home from school to our small
apartment and spin the Beatles’ Blue and Red albums. We used to crank
the records and dance around to “Yellow Submarine” until I needed a
diaper change. - What was the first concert you ever went to?
MFront, center on the floor at the Bender Arena in D.C. I saw
Soundgarden on their Superunknown tour. I weighed about 65 pounds and
almost snapped my ribs on the security gate from the dense crowd
pushing behind me. The sheer adrenaline numbed me from all pain during
the show but afterwards I was so bruised up it hurt to breathe. I lost
some hearing too but it was so worth it. - What or whom do you go to for musical inspiration?
Driving down country roads with no destination, waking up before the
sun and getting hammered on espresso, dropping in on shows around the
city (NYC), and jamming with other musicians. But you can find
inspiration in the most mundane and ordinary things if you’re truly
looking for it. - Without using the words “alternative,” “pop,” or “rock,” describe your sound.
Wistful pianos and catchy summertime guitars blowing around the mind
of a wailing storyteller. - Stones or Beatles?
Beatles… I have to pay homage to the first roots that sprouted. I
discovered the Stones a bit later, around the same time as Led
Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, who together probably had the most profound
impact on my music and entire decision to choose this career and life
path. - What’s your dream collaboration?
Swizz Beatz and Hayley Williams. Swizz inspires me more than just
about any producer. He always pushes the envelop on current trends and
stays outside the box, always surprising me with something fresh. I
know if he and I were behind the boards we could rip it up with me and
Hayley’s voice. Hayley to me is a total prodigy and she was built to sing.
I feel her voice in my entire body when she sings. - Do you find the song or does the song find you?
The song finds me always. The vice versa never works out. I find that
I have to renounce the world entirely and let the song write or
rewrite me in order for its manifestation. Afterward you get a new
song and a new me. - How do you discover new music
IHere on COREnered, through friends, on Youtube, going to shows both
here and outside of NYC, and on blogs such as www.crazedhits.com –
I’ve found it to be one of the most valuable resources for discovering
new gems out there.
